B-Mets Use Big Innings To Beat Connecticut
7/8/2007

Mark Kiger had three hits, including a go-ahead two-run triple in the eighth, helping the Binghamton Mets to a 12-10 win over the Connecticut Defenders at NYSEG Stadium Sunday.  The B-Mets have won two of their last three.

Connecticut (37-51) scored first, tallying five runs in the second off Jose Sanchez.  Jake Wald hit a run-scoring triple, Alex Requeña and Geno Espineli picked up run-scoring singles and John Bowker drove in two with a base hit.

The B-Mets (37-49) responded with an eight-run third off Espineli.  After Wilson Batista and J.E. Cruz reached with a double and single, respectively, Jose Sanchez drove in Batista with a fielder’s choice before Lastings Milledge singled home Cruz.  After Corey Coles singled to load the bases, Kiger smacked a two-run double to right that brought in Sanchez and Milledge.  Once Drew Butera was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases, Caleb Stewart singled in Coles and Kiger for a 6-5 B-Mets lead.  Batista then grounded out, scoring Butera, before Stewart came in on a wild pitch for an 8-5 B-Mets advantage.

The Defenders pulled within a run in the fifth when Tyler Von Schell scored on a wild pitch and Requeña tripled in a run before Von Schell hit a two-run homer off Joe Serfass in the sixth for a 9-8 Connecticut lead.  Von Schell’s eighth-inning fielder’s choice plated an insurance run.

Binghamton used another big inning to go ahead for good.  Connecticut reliever Taylor Wilding (1-1) began the eighth by walking Cruz on four pitches before pinch-hitter Brett Harper and Milledge singled.  Cruz was put out in a rundown between home and third on Milledge’s hit, but Coles followed with an opposite-field single to left, scoring Harper, before Kiger tripled home Milledge and Coles.  Mike Carp’s sacrifice fly brought in Kiger with the game’s final run.

Kevin Tomasiewicz (2-1) pitched a scoreless 2/3 of an inning for the win.  Carlos Muñiz tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 16th save in 19 chances.

Monday, the B-Mets play the rubber game of their three-game series against the Connecticut Defenders.  Marcos Carvajal (3-6, 4.68) will start for the B-Mets against Brooks McNiven (4-3, 2.70) of Connecticut.  Game time is 1:05 from NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 12:50 on ESPN 1360 WYOS.

Notes: the 12 runs scored ties a season high (also 5/29 @ NB, 5/13 @ POR)…Binghamton’s last eight-run inning was in the eighth 6/7/2006 @ REA…the B-Mets have had an inning in which they’ve scored five or more runs in each of their last three ballgames…Kiger is 6 for 8 with five RBI in the series…Muñiz has earned a save in his last five appearances.
